Multilingual Menu: Do You Really Need One?

Maintaining a multilingual menu the old way is a pain. With AI it does itself — but does it actually pay off for your restaurant? An honest analysis.

01

When multilingual pays off

Rule of thumb: if at least 15% of your guests aren't German-native, multilingual pays off. Indicators:

  • Tourist area (city center, station, sights within 5-10 min walking)
  • Business-travel proximity (trade fairs, airport, convention center)
  • Nationalities in your service staff (often a mirror of your guests)
  • Share of English reviews on Google/Yelp/TripAdvisor > 10%

02

Which languages make sense?

For most DACH restaurants, 4-6 languages suffice:

  • English — required, nearly every tourist speaks it
  • Italian — standard at Italian restaurants, optional elsewhere
  • French — required at bistros / brasseries
  • Spanish — growing, mediterranean restaurants
  • Turkish — important in major German cities
  • Chinese (Mandarin) — for heavy Asian-tourist clientele

With MenuMagic, 14 languages come automatically — the guest picks via QR.

03

Translation pitfalls

Translating dish names literally kills authenticity:

  • Wrong: "Spaghetti Carbonara" → "Spaghetti with bacon and egg sauce"
  • Right: "Spaghetti Carbonara" stays — only the description ("Pasta with cured pork, pecorino, egg, black pepper") translates

Proper names, culinary classics and specialties stay in the original language. More authentic — and lets the guest recognize the dish at other restaurants later.

MenuMagic catches this automatically: pasta names stay Italian, sushi terms Japanese, tapas Spanish. Only descriptive text translates.

04

Cost-benefit: how fast does it pay off?

Assumption: 20% of your guests are international, average table ticket €35, 80 tables/day.

  • International tables per day: 16 × €35 = €560 revenue
  • With multilingual menu: +27% (see study) = +€151/day
  • Per month: +€4,530 extra revenue
  • MenuMagic Restaurant plan: €49.99/mo
  • Net: +€4,480 per month

Even on much more conservative assumptions (10% international, +15% lift), the subscription pays itself off 10-30× per month.
